Travel management for vision impaired passengers on collective transport

Las Palmas’ urban public transport company has recently unveiled new visual cues in the form of road markings to help visually impaired passengers board buses more easily.

Las Palmas’ urban public transport company has recently unveiled new visual cues in the form of road markings to help visually impaired passengers board buses more easily.

These visual cues (see image left) have been rolled out at four bus stops around the city, which have adopted a so called ‘double stops’ approach. Double stops essentially mean that there is enough space at each bus stop for two buses to stop and pick up passengers at the same time.

Linking these new visual cues up with the passenger boarding protocol at the ‘double stops’, Guaguas Municipales has adapted the protocol, so that when a driver sees a visually impaired person at stop point 1, he/she will pick up the passenger despite having boarded passengers at stop point 2.

The double stop system is designed also to facilitate speedy boarding as passengers are able to see directly where the buses will stop and position themselves in line accordingly.

Further measures to improve the safety and convenience of passengers with vision impairment will be implemented as part of the CIVITAS DESTINATION Project. These include the installation of 20 new solar-powered traveller information systems, adapted for use by visually impaired passengers, which will give real time updates on travel information at bus stops throughout the city.
