Madeira Island in the North Atlantic is part of the Madeira Archipelago, along with Porto Santo and the Desertas and Selvagens Islands. Madeira is a well-known and established tourist destination. There are tourists who come to Madeira almost every year and some come more than once a year for short visits. As a result, the economy of Madeira is based on the tertiary sector. Approximately two-thirds of the island is a natural park. Levadas (man-made water channels with pathways) cover almost the whole island and both residents and tourists use them for recreation.
