Clean fuels and vehicles

Travel options and infrastructures for  cleaner vehicles and fleets

In seeking to encourage cleaner and better transport, most CIVITAS cities explore innovative solutions for introducing and pushing the use of clean vehicles and alternative fuels in their integrated strategies.

This thematic group looks at solutions that stimulate the spread of clean and energy-efficient vehicles, including private and public fleets.

Electric mobility, fuelling infrastructures, hybrid vehicles, use of biodiesel, biogas and compressed natural gas (CNG) are key topic areas for the TG.

More than focusing only on technological advancements and new solutions on the market, the group explore in particular procurement and tendering schemes and opportunities to source biofuels locally.

Youth For Public Transport (Y4PT) Foundation, with the support of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) and its members, and following the long-standing tradition of Y4PT Youth Lab series, is promoting the organization of local transport hackathons around the world, by combining the best of boundless human creativity and the benefits of current information and communications technologies (ICTs) in collaborative environments, with the aim of advancing transport sector towards sustainability.

Winners from each local transport hackathon will join other Canada-based hackers at the 1st Y4PT Global Transport Hackathon Montreal 2017 ( http://www.y4pt.org/projects/hackathon ) in the framework of the 62nd UITP Global Public Transport Summit Montreal 2017 – the world’s oldest and leading sustainable transport event – to contest in a final round for unveiling the world’s best ground-breaking transport solutions.

More than 20 major cities around the world are hosting the first local transport hackathons. Other cities are also welcome to join.

Different local stakeholders such as universities, youth groups, ICT companies, transport operators, authorities, start-up mentors and hackers are called to collaborate with Y4PT and to be part of the world’s first ever global transport hackathon.

Everyone is invited to get on board. This is an one-off opportunity to show to your audience and users how important is for you to support this kind of events where innovation and creativity is putting forward new ICT-related solutions to boost both the private sector business performance and the public sector policy efficacy, and thus to unlock new opportunities to expand, diversify and renew your organization’s portfolio of products and services.

Increasing the use of alternative fuels and of clean and energy-efficient vehicles as well as enhancing their integration into the urban transport system are key to reducing local air and noise pollution.

In the field of clean fuels and vehicles CIVITAS Plus cities (2008-2012) cities have worked on clean fuels and fuelling infrastructure; cleaner fleets and hybrid, clean and electric vehicles.

The use of cleaner fuels and vehicles reduces local air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, contribute to the health of citizens and decrease dependency on fossil fuels.

By 2025 all vehicles driven in an average or large city should be electric powered, be the engine hybrid or only electric to achieve the best available air quality.
To be energically sustainable those vehicles should be the lightest possible, and these are only electric bicycles. Sidecars must also be considered as well as small motorcycles for people not adaptable to bicycles. Cars should only be taxis and commercial vehicles.

Cities play a key-role in the deployment of electric vehicles. Ideally the deployment is part of a structured and effective strategy that blends in with the city’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan. Electromobility measures can help to reach SUMP targets such as air quality improvement, noise mitigation, reduced energy use, and decreased car dependency.

With this CIVITAS Insight, the CIVITAS CAPITAL project wants to provide information on e-mobility and its integration in SUMPs.

As we are interested to get your views and ideas by 14 July 2016, all members of this Thematic Group have the possibility to contribute to the content of this CIVITAS Insight. If you are interested to contribute, please leave a message here!

Dear all:

Youth For Public Transport (Y4PT), a foundation created by the International Association of Public Transport (UITP), is pleased to share with you the Global Call for joining the Y4PT #BreathableCities World Campaign (http://www.y4pt.org/projects/campaigns/healthy-mobility/breathable-cities/): a multi-stakeholder initiative to address Air Quality in Urban Transport and Impact on Human Health.

As you go through it, you will find a Step-By-Step Manual to better understand how to host, to organize the Campaign locally, in a city. It is quite simple. It is just matter of will.

We invite you to share the hyperlink to the Campaign with as many stakeholders you know in order to, at certain point, in the future, to achieve a non-polluted urban air for everyone.

Please feel free to send us your feedback here. We would like to hear from you.

Thank you so much in advance for your support, for getting the word out and for taking part of it.

Looking forward to the involvement of CIVITAS cities and other stakeholders.

Y4PT Team

#CleanAir is a #HumanRight. Tackling #ClimateChange all together. No more #AirPollution in our #Cities. #SustainableMobility #GlobalGoals #SDGs #COP21

This perception persists when organising open-air activities, festivals or street events. Whether you are a private company or a municipality, it is thought that you can’t avoid using a car to transport tools and material.
